StanLei ('stan-lay') is a vocalist, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer based between London and Toulouse, whose sound falls somewhere between neo-folk, indie soul and bedroom pop, with diverse influences.
As a young child learning cello, piano and later singing, she loved her dad’s cassettes of Billie Holliday, the Beach Boys, Queen and the Eagles – and still loves sad songs and angelic harmonies. She began singing and songwriting at 14, and at 16 was creating vocal choruses for friends making underground UK hip hop. Aged 18 she began teaching herself the guitar and moved to her adopted hometown of Bristol, where she sang with various local bands. 2015 marked the beginning of 4 years of travelling extensively as a nomadic seasonal worker, developing her songwriting and connecting with new friends and fans from around the world through music.
Her debut EP BASSLESS was recorded with producer and drummer Sam Bradley (Sonic Sculpture Recording). A stripped-down, siren-voiced acoustic offering, featuring acclaimed NYC guitarist Rotem Sivan, BASSLESS was released independently in April 2019. In December 2019, a self-produced acoustic single, Alameda, followed - described by Come Here Floyd as "poetic and poignant. The conscious folk vibes... something real and grand."
After finishing her second European acoustic tour in Belgium and Germany in December 2019, StanLei is currently working on her debut album, drawing inspiration from contemporaries like Tash Sultana, Laura & Tom Misch, Kate Tempest, (((0))), FKJ, Sudan Archives.
